for the past 6 months i have been deliberating over getting a new tattoo. it is not my first, i have 3 total, the first one i got when i was 22 and i was moving from NJ to NC. i grew up at the beach (the jersrey shore) most of my life and moving to charlotte meant no more ocean. so i got the cliche dolphin jumping through a wave on my bikini line. needless to say 3 children later, it is now an orca and there will be no pictures, lol!
the second tattoo is the number 13.1, which after i ran the half marathon in 2009 i vowed i would tattoo on my body and i did. it is the distance in miles of a half marathon.
for this new tattoo, i knew what i wanted it to read and that i wanted it on my right forearm, but kept going back and forth over where, horizontal, vertical...
{quick, shaky and random tattoo video clip}
i also knew i didnt want it in just any font or write it in my own handwriting, so i commissioned Mara Zepeda (neither snow) to custom design the sentiment in her amazing calligraphy art. it was not cheap, but i think her word art is truly beautiful and it was worth every cent! i love it.
i know not everyone loves or appreciates tattoos, but for me, my tattoo's represent turning points in my life. there is special significance to each one. my new "live inspired" tattoo is on the inside of my right arm (i'm right handed) so i could see it and is a reminder to create and see the beauty in all things including my art.
my art has become so much a larger part of my life than it was 10 or even 5 years ago and the roads it has lead me down have been such a significant part of my life's journey...i am changed, humbled and empowered by the simple idea of "living inspired".
as bill and i continue to make big decisions about where the art, the passion for living inspired and the dreams of possibility lead us, i am grateful for the journey and prepared for the BIG dreams we are building on the horizon.
i really didn't have the time or the desire to create today with my schedule, so i forced myself...about 10 minutes into it i really thought, "maybe i skip this week." i am glad i stuck it out...lots of layers but they all are important stepping stones in the journey to the finished page.
still playing with some fun jenni Bowlin stickers...loving the hexagons! layered them on top of joint tape, painted layer of neutral grey acrylic paint, rub-ons (man are these oldies), paint chips, tapes, drips of paint and Pastel pencil. really liking the texture mixed with the color combos in this one.
It has been a busy June so far in the Downey household. School is out and we have been on the road the past couple weeks teaching my workshops and squeezing in a little fun here and there.
I have one more event in June this upcoming weekend at Scrap 2 It in Fort Collins, CO. This is actually my first time teaching in The Rocky Mountain state and I'm so excited. So if your in the area, please come join us for a weekend of workshops. I will also be teaching The Big 40!
omg this weeks inspiration was a sinking ship...the more i added to it the uglier it became (dont believe me? watch the video!) then all of a sudden with a doodle of india ink it became a page I LOVE! that is why the quote i stamped by picasso is my favorite and needed to be on this page, "inspiration exists, but it has to find you working"...TRUE DAT!
watch the ugliest page ever take a turn for awesomeness!!
i really love jenni bowlins product and i secretly hoard it, so i thought i would pull from the stash and use it. i layered several sheets of stickers to create the background, including the alphabets. sealed it with gel medium and covered the pages with a wash of Nickel Azo Gold acrylic paint. slapped down a random photo (i buy lots of photos off of ebay just for collaging, so i have no idea where this picture is from). framed it with charcoal pencil and tape and wrote the quote in charcoal over tape strips as well.
she is just so flippin' cool, real, talented and funny! we are only 2 days in and there are still 2 more days of amazing creativity and artwork left! i thought i would tease you with a sneak peek of the fun we have been having this weekend!
