Using GOLDEN paints, build a basic working knowledge of color, layering, blending, experiment with tools, textures and shape to create the artwork you have always wanted to create, but were afraid how and where to start. in this small setting you will be given one on one attention, with the comfort of asking questions and being guided when you need that extra artistic push. i will create along side you throughout the weekend sharing first hand working knowledge of techniques and tips as well as demonstrating them in application. No drawing or painting skills required. students should bring an apron.

after internet stalking her for a bit more than a year, the day finally arrived that i would be able to sit one-on-one with Jo Barby and learn how to "see".
captivated by how Jo's artwork reaches right through the 2-dimensional surface and becomes its 3-dimensional entity, i had to learn from her, i knew i wanted to "see" what she did in the everyday. So imagine how excited i was when i asked her to fly half way across the world and teach at my STUDIO and she said YES!
wanting to be perfect right out of the gate, i am not going to lie, i struggled the first day. i wanted so badly to "see" what she sees that i lost sight of appreciating her gift of process. that as an artist, i could never see what she sees. that gift of sight is intuitive and quite possibly a very intimate part of the process for each artist and she was right there in front of me sharing it with us...i needed to listen.
day 2 i allowed the lessons of the day before marry and filter through my intuitive process. Jo worked effortlessly with each student and the artwork being produced was magic. i was open and i created with Jo's guidence.
the gift of learning, trusting and listening is what Jo gave me...her artistic process, techniques and generosity inspired me.
i was able to create in a way i had never thought i could, not to recreate art, but to see the art in the everyday.
Jo taught me to see.
thank you Jo, i am so grateful and so very proud of this piece.
i remembered to capture a couple stepping stones along the way, thought it might be fun to share. (its kinda hard to believe it myself i am glad i did)
she helped me create a makeshift light box to help me "see" the highlights and shadows
to find out more about Jo Barby and her art, i have included a few links below.
finding cool new products is super exciting to me. found this one at CHA (actually, i found Nathalie Kalbach and she was standing in front of this booth, lol). so i watched the demos and was convinced i needed this...all of it!!
i have visions of pressing my favorite paintbrushes into the mold putty and casting dozens of 3-Dimensional paintbrushes and embedding them into my art. well, its on the list to do!
the possibilities are kinda endless really!!!
if you have a couple minutes today and you are looking for some really cool new products to change the way you think, check out the products and video demos below. i think you will feel just as inspired as i did!!

i always test run a workshop before i teach it on the road.
i am moving away from my traditional format of teaching several classes over the course of a weekend to teaching one jam-packed in-depth course with a group of students. for many reasons really, but mostly because i really enjoy taking the creative process through a complete range of exploratory outcomes.
as the name suggests, the "Metamorphosis" will not only involve the media we are transforming, but ideally the artist themselves!
this weekend i taught the 2-day event for the first time at my studio and quite frankly it was spectacular! the ladies created anywhere from 3-5 pieces of art and really embraced all the ideas i wanted to challenge them with. i wanted to see how much we could get done and how far i could take the concepts and even i was surprised at how much we accomplished!
i'm stoked to roll this bad-ass workshop to the masses!!
(Note: the online workshop is only a fraction of what we will do in the 2-day event, but i wanted to make a small part of the processes available to those that cannot take part in the in person events)
what an amazing 2 days spent collaborative painting with our first class of ARTISTRY students
Stephen and i couldn't be more different in our stylistic approaches to art, but together we make one hell of a team! the artwork produced this weekend was nothing short of spectacular.
i had to blog today and boast about this 2-day, intimate workshop experience and share several photos of the students work in various stages. may just be the best event yet!
this is a "tag-team" event where i begin by teaching you how to build the foundation of the piece by incorporating my love of color, mixed-media and free-spirited style. we work on a small canvas first (the learning canvas so to speak), building color confidence, blending, dripping and layering and then take those skills to the large 3' x 4' canvas.
then Stephen, takes the lead with his fine art and technical drawing skills and teaches you how to "draw what you see". building an understanding of scale, shape and proportion he guides you through each step of the drawing process, first practicing the grid method on paper, then on your practice canvas. you then learn how to see and paint shadows, layer glazes and add contrast, while allowing the colors in your first layer to show through.
then we go BIG! taking all the skills and translating the image into a large scale piece.
SO FRICKEN COOL!
it was such an amazing event we have decided we have to repeat it!!!! we have also added the second collaborative ARTISTRY event to the calendar in 2015.
mark your calendars, these ARTISTRY collaborative events only allow 10 students and are already filling
see below for links to these events and more event information
(the first ARTISTRY event is not a pre-requisite for the second one. they can be done independently of each other, in any order)
