i ran 10+ miles this morning!
check it out with my nike + ipod.
the last mile was brutal and i had to walk most of it.
i have to figure out the whole hydration vs. urination thing.
if i drink water before or while i run i have to pee,
however, if i don't i am dying of thirst by mile 8, but don't have to pee (sometimes).
that whole giving birth thing really messes with the whole running and urinating thing.
anyone have any tips?
also gearing up for my trip to ENGLAND, i leave thursday and i cannot wait!
and check out where i will be teaching - Latimer Place
one day i will move there (to England),
and live in a small cottage in stratford upon avon where i will paint and create all day.
hey a girl can dream!!
if any of you ladies attending the event want to run with me, i am bringing my running shoes and clothes because i haven't run in England before and i want to say that i have!
also i am going to have to stock up on my ALL TIME VERY FAVORITEST body lotion in the world while i am there. i am down to my final tub. i bought it the first time in spain after my luggage had gone missing and loved it! i figured, "hey it's dove i will buy more in the states when i run out." NOT!
it is only sold in europe. so i will be having to take a special field trip to stock up on some more before i leave.
Hi Donna,
You can buy your Dove silk on eBay. There is a seller from Australia that sells it. Of course, buying it while in Europe is much better! :-)

Hi Donna -
You know when people say "you suck" because they are really jealous of you? (People say it to me because I have naturally curly strawberry blonde hair and I'm 44 and don't need to color it yet.) Well, the whole England thing.....YOU SUCK! LOL! I clicked on the link and the place you are staying just looks amazing and it is in the same county my mom is from. She is from a small village called Granborough in Buckinghamshire. It is a bit north of you near Aylesbury. You are going to have an awesome time! Can you tell us about that thing on your arm. I see the people on Biggest Loser wear those too. What are they? Heart monitor exercise thing? Can you informus on your blog? Cheerio!

wow, 10+ miles...that is awesome. I can only do about 2 miles and it takes me almost 1/2 hour. I have the same peeing problem when running. I put the Kegels to work. Have fun in jolly ol' England.

This may be a stupid question, but are you drinking water while you're running? If you have sips of water throughout the 10 miles you shouldn't be thirsty by mile 8, and you shouldn't have to pee because you won't have had a big drink an hour before. Maybe you need a fuel belt!
http://www.fuelbelt.com/fuel_belts/4_bottle.html
(I'm mothering you now, but don't forget to have a recovery drink within 20 mins of finishing that kind of distance!!! A glass of chocolate milk is the perfect carb-protein-fat ratio that your body needs and post workout. Within that 20 mins your body is better able to absorb the protein into the blood stream, and that helps make your muscles stronger!)
Posted by: Katie | March 30, 2009 at 03:41 PM
I don't drink water before (well, the day before...) but I take a fuel belt-which takes getting used to, because if you aren't careful it can chafe. Anyway, then I either take small drinks at designated mile marks-3, 5, 7, etc., making sure I monitor my intake, I don't have to go during the run. I also use GU, on my very long runs, so gu and water at 8 or 10 miles (45 min to 1 hour is a good mark) that helps me... juts my approach. :)
I totally agree with Katie-my new after run drink (I drink at 15 min after the long run) chocolate milk. I thought milk sounded gross, but with just a little chocolate, it's the best healing beverage!! :)
Posted by: jkhenson | March 30, 2009 at 03:51 PM
I mean, I drink water the day before, but not the day of. And I meant just my approach. :)) oops, typos. :)

I was wondering I am just starting to run. First stab today I ran/walked/jogged one mile. How do you get your breathing down, my throat is killing me. Also how long did it take you to work up to 5 miles and not die after. You have givin me the motavation I needed to get off me a** and start losing my baby fat(my youngest if 4 yikes). over the past 3 years I have gone for close to 300lbs to 219lbs. Last year I was in the 190s but am back up to 219. Keep up the running and the great blog. I will catch up to you in miles hopfully someday.

I just ran (well I think it's walked, but if felt like ran) at 4.5 for 13.2 mintues...that's ONE MILE! Then I walked then I ran againat 4.5 for 6.5 minutes, another 1/2 mile! I've only ever done 5 mintues. It felt great, like I really excerised.
Congrtas on the 10 miles that's amazing. I've shared your story with a few friends.
Posted by: TracyBzz | March 30, 2009 at 04:42 PM
Hey Donna - same problem with the running/peeing thing. Have the same issue with jumping jacks. So I try to exercise first thing in the morning...easier to do some days than others. If not able to work it in first thing, then I use a panty liner (wow this is personal) just in case.
BTW, got my fabric scissors out at home and finished trimming out the Blooms pages. ;-) I LOVE my journals/books!! Hope you're doing well - it was so great to meet you!

Hey Donna- working on getting the ipod plus system but right now I am training for the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk, so most of my exercise is walking. Do you think this tracks well for walking as well as running??
Keep up the awesome work you have totally been an inspiration...I am working up to running more.
Have a great trip to England!!

Great job on the 10 miles!!! :)
For the peeing thing, Kegel Exercises...seriously! Here is a link to wikipedia about them and they really work.

OK, I just read what is on Wikipedia and you don't need that metal device, OY! When you are peeing, contract your muscles so you stop peeing. Once you've figured out which muscles keep you from peeing, contract and hold for 5 seconds 50 times a day (you don't have to do these exercises while peeing) and you can do this any time, like while surfing the net, driving, etc. and no one knows you are doing it. pregnancy stretches those muscles out and these exercises will tighten them right up.

Wow I can't even imagine doing 10 miles in one run. I run about 2.65 mi. on the treadmil in about 30 minutes. Is that good? How long did it take you to run 10 mi.?
I also wondered about the sipping water thing?? I sip as I run otherwise my huffing and puffing makes my throat way too dry and then it gets sore. I don't sip a ton...maybe 5-8 oz. in a 30 min period.

Hi Donna,
Congrats for your trip, I love England too, the little towns are awsome, I would like to go England some day, in the meantime I watched Bristih movies haha. So weird- I thought about you this morning when I was taking a major detour to avoid traffic and caous while taking my tinies to school. I thought "hey if I wanted to run 10 miles this may be the way to go. Wonder if Donna is into her long runs?" hmmmm? GO GO GO Donna

I'll be your neighbor in Stratford-upon-Avon and we can run together, too! I'm finally back into the groove, trying to regain what I lost (with respect to running) when I went in for surgery and ended up having another emergency procedure so I didn't die (which I was pretty close to they said) within 5 weeks of the first. The recovery has been a very long haul but enjoying my outings and I, too, have a love affair with my Nike+iPod. Have a great time in England - it's on my bucket list!

had to laugh at your hydration/urination situation. I have the same problem. On Sun, I ran through a college campus, madly opening every door I could find seeking a restroom. Finally, one was unlocked! I liked the other suggestions of hydrating while running. Found these online http://running.about.com/od/hydrationcarriers/tp/tophydrationcarriers.htm
Awesome job on the 10 miles! That's my goal. I'm up to 4 now.

I found it (googled) for under $6 a container. I haven't a clue what type of price you will find while you are on your trip, but I thought I would give you the link. :)

You can also try the Whipped Silk by St. Ives. Its so smooth, non greasy and feels so great. And its highly affordable and usually in the lower and bottom shelves.
I wanted you to know that I have made an exercise committment - and you were my inspiration. I am walking in the AVON 2-day walk (39.3 miles) in SF this summer. My fitness goal this year was to be fit by 50 - that will be December. I lost a dear friend from high school this past fall to breast cancer and I felt I wanted to do something proactive. I had been following your blog and when you talked about how you got started. I have to get my fundraising done, but I think the hardest thing will be walking across the Golden Gate bridge - because I am afraid of heights!I figured if "Donna can do it" and run the distances and races she has been doing - I can do this! So thank you.

I'm laughing about all the advice. I won't repeat except to say you are CRAZY to try and run 8 miles with no water. Look into those tune belts or something like that. They have lots of varieties. Anything over ten you really should be trying to do some kind of carb too. So gross to think about when you are running, but that is probably why you had a hard time with that last mile. Try the Jellie Bellie Energy Beans (Target sells them by all the energy bars). I used them when I trained for the Chicago Marathon and they taste pretty darn good. Good luck. If all else fails find a bush and let it go sister. Then you are truly a runner!! ;)

Hey, first time commenter, love your blog. Hopefully this is slightly helpful. I'm a rather experienced runner with two marathons and several halfs under my belt. The whole nutrition/hydration thing varies for everyone. I have a running belt or I just carry a water bottle with me if I'm running outside. Treadmills hold my water for me if that's the way I'm working out. I take a small sip or two then start, then go 2 miles and do the same thing, then 2 more miles and a sip or two, and so on. Some sort of nutrition is essential if running more than 8 miles. There are sports beans (jelly beans with caffeine and stuff basically) or GU's or Clif Shots (flavored snot, basically...) all options are rather gross, but uber helpful. You can buy them at your local running or sports store. I take a GU after every 5 miles. Keep up the great work!!! You are an inspiration to us all both in art and striving for health. I will also add that after my third child (now 17 mos.) the whole urination thing hit hard. I'm doing kegels now to hopefully help...

Donna,
Australia sells Dove products. Next time, yell, I'll send some over! ;)
Boring Sidenote: My mum was born in Stratford Upon Avon. You buy beautiful pottery there. Treat yourself to some!
Enjoy your trip you lucky duck! And send a postcard! (Yes to ALL of us!) lol
Way to go on the 10k's. I doubt I could do 5! Sorry no advice on the drinkies/pee thing - I've had 5 kids - and yeah, water and running don't mix. I'd prefer to walk. Less 'bounce'!
Safe Journeys!!

10 miles!!! wow lady! and I can't help ya with the pee thing - 21 jumping jacks set my bladder in motion! lol
I have to say your post recently INSPIRED me - I have similar pictures of myself and decided if you can make the commitment then maybe I could too - so I'm dieting, taking Alli for help, and exercising to Jillian Michaels in my living room! Thank you for sharing all your hard work with us!
and have fun in England :)

Well done on your 10K.
Someday could you share the playlist you listen to when you run? Thanks!
Enjoy England.

Congratulations on your 10 mile run! You rock.
Totally understand about the hydration/peeing issue. When I started training for my first 1/2 marathon last year it took me awhile to figure out what was good for me.
I try to plan my running route with a rest room for the long runs... just in case. I do not have a fuel belt or a handle held bottle but I am considering buying something. Right now I make 2 loop around my subdivision and either stop at the water fountains or home if I need something to drink.
Hydration is crutial for long runs (anything over 1 hr) especially with the hotter weather arriving. Also try the Jelly Belly Sports Beans for fuel. I love them especially the lime and blue ones!
Happy Running!

You go girl is right! Nice job on the running!!! While I am a different type of cardio junky then you I was told when I asked my obgyn about needing to pee while jumping jack/running thingy that it is something that is easily fixed and should not have to be "put up with" nor "worked around".
Now I have to tell you I have an appointment with the urologist and have not gone yet (a few weeks away) but according to my doc there is an easy pacheesy proceedure that is outpatient and should fix that problem. It is not the same as the incontenence problems that are more regular, that's different. She called this "stress incontenence". (sorry, personal - but how else do you discuss this one???) She said that it is a direct result of having children and that kegels alone wont fix it. Now, I am not a fan of any type of surgery if it can be avoided.... but I have tried many of the suggestions listed to no avail.
So, like I said I am not a doc and haven't been to the specialist yet - but you may want to look into it if the other less invasive suggestions you were given don't work out. Also just having the urge to go is most likely different then the jumping jack effect (those who have it know what I mean!) and I'm not sure which one is more your issue.
So - I struggled with writing this due to it's nature, but figured if it helps someone then it was worth it.
Many happy miles to you!!!!
Keep up the good work!!!
PS - close to my goal of losing 100lbs! Just over 20 to go... whoo hoo!!!

Train your bladder.
First off, you NEED the water, while you run. Anything over 4 miles (or 45 minutes) you should have some re-hydration.
And, from there, you need to begin training your bladder.
As you run in your training, you should pee before you take off, then EVERYTIME you run, get water at the same time (ie: 3 miles, 5 miles, 8 miles) just an ounce or 2. But enough to re-hydrate.
If you do it this way, you will sweat, etc, and release......then re-hydrate...then sweat, etc.....and the peeeing really should not be an issue!
Keep working at it girl, you are on the right track!

Congrats on the 10 miles. ;-) I am glad you brought up the water/peeing issued because that is something I deal with as well. I HAVE to drink water while I exercise and I can't see how people next to me on the treadmill don't have a water bottle! CRAZY!! I definitely need to figure out the whole sweat output/water input thing so it's not an issue!! The things us women have to work around!!! ;-)

I know this may sound crazy, but while I trained for my half marathon I carried a bottle of water with me. Even when I was running up to 12 miles at a time, I rarely drank the full bottle. I would sip from it when needed and then after the run I would hydrate more. Most people drink too much water...which can be just as dangerous as being dehydrated. I even carried the bottle of water with me on race day. My sister-in-law is a marathon runner and she does the same thing. It takes a bit to get use to at first but it is nice to have water when you need it throughout your run and on race day. I never hydrate before running, just as I go. After two babies I totally understand the weaker bladder muscles, but I could make it through without the need to visit a bathroom doing the sips from a bottle.
