this weeks inspiration wednesday began as a page with 9 small shipping tags. ideally i thought perhaps i would create 9 mini collages. however as i began playing i decided to use them as background texture and man did it make me happy. it got me thinking about all kinds of items that can be collaged over for hidden yet recognizable texture...total brainstorming opportunities here.
so basically here is what i did.
- i began with a basic white layer of paint
- then blended some greens, blues and a bit of pink.
- added some text/words cut out from fancy pants packaging i had lying around
- i hand drew the heart in pencil with a very light hand
- then drew the outline of the heart with a charcoal pencil ( the charcoal pencil with leave a line as well as blend when wet)
- i painted the inside of the heart with watercolor
- added a white wash of paint along the page sides and edges.
- adhered quotes/text cut from a book
this is one of the inclusion tags that lays in front of this page. (note to all my hebrew reading friends, i actually adhered this text correctly)
i like the book text sentiment...makes me happy.
what did you create this week?
what do we need to see...share your inspirations!
(tuesday) - 5 mile run
- time: 1 hr
- distance: 5.31 miles
These are great pages Donna, thanks for sharing! I also love the tag texture.

I love the painting! and the texture, but most of all I needed the reminder to start getting in better shape, off to the treadmill!! Thanks Donna!

I love your tags background!
I created greeting cards this week using twigs from the garden and embelishments I created from natural wool using a felt needle http://www.tapuz.co.il/blog/ViewEntry.asp?EntryId=1527554
Let me know if you need any more book pages in Hebrew, I can see you're using them :-)
BTW when I use text pages I like to tear out the page without reading it, use it and then see if the words combined with what I created give some kind of meaning, a game I play with myself :-) I tried to read what I could from your page in Hebrew, it says something about some kind of a monster, I like the way it goes together with the word "Play" :-)

This is really cool, Donna! I love the texture, and the words, and the colors...
Also, I'm wondering how you got the texture (in the heart page)? Did you use a letter press?

I see that Anat was trying to read the Hebrew words. Me too... I'm not sure you would like to know that, but it says something about (and describes) slaughtering. Not sure it's the right kind of "play"...
However, slaughtering has a mystic-figurative quality in Judaism (slaughtering of animal sacrifices, not human beings of course). I believe it can be translated as an act of cleansing and purifying.
It's beautiful, anyways...

More tag stuff--yay! This morning I made this "textual tag" after watching the video of your "make and take" at CHA. I LOVE this, and have a few more in the works. I didn't have any fluid acrylic paint, so I just took a white ink pad and inked that puppy up. Also, not a big heart girl, so I went with a freehand star instead. Just a first effort, but I can see lots of ways to go with this idea. Thanks!

Hi Donna, I love your art work, but, forgive me, I am really inspired by seeing your running updates. I am just starting out, and two days ago I made it two miles straight without stopping. I was so proud of myself (never had done it beofre) and now my knees hurt so badly I have to take atleast a week off. I love that you are trotting along - I know I will be following in your footsteps again. Thanks for all the updates (and your beautiful art/scrapbook work).

This is old news because you've been using shipping tags for ages, but I love that such a basic office supply product can be used for art. I have ALWAYS been a junky for paper, paper products, and especially office supply stores!

I really think that the shipping tags is very cool. My favorite technique would have to be painting over text. It adds a wonderful dimension and I can't wait to try it out. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Donna,
Like the effect of the texture and that you are using your own words. I'm a calligrapher so I tend to calligraphy mine rather than cut them out. I did a two-day workshop recently on the context of calligraphy, it's purpose in contemporary society and being the progenitor of your own words, rather than using others' words - you are definitely progeniating (is that a word!!).
Your use of colour and texture is fun to view as well.
Cheersluvvy,
KazT

I use igoogle as my home page..... On usual blogs they show the title of the post and a few lines of the post itself..... when you use the fancy titles (like today) they don't show up as the title of your current post... they are simply blank... leaving me to wonder if you posted or not. Just giving you and FYI in case you never knew.... Thanks for great inspiration today... My daughter loved this one... we just bought some canvases so she can't wait to try... she is only 5 ;o)

I love this - especially that you took found objects (tags, cut out words from packaging, etc) and made something so wonderful with them! A lot of my work lately has been finding uses for packaging materials, from stamping on it, painting on it, using bits and pieces of it - I'm beginning to love finding all the ways that the stuff I used to toss out can be made into great stuff.
Thanks for your inspiration!
