i have been working on a new PanPastel workshop for Spark. i am thrilled to be a part of this event and really wanted to bring something different to the creative table.
PanPastels make me happy! the more i use them the more i understand about layering color, building texture and the pure richness of the color.
i created this piece on 12 x 18" black charcoal paper...LOVE IT!
then i decided to play around with a couple of art pieces from my favorite artist, giorgia o'keeffe.
this for obvious reasons is one of my favorites of hers known simply as "red poppy"
her originals were done in oil paint on canvas...
this is my pan pastel reproduction on canvas board.
sitting proud on the easle for the photo, in the middle of my creative aftermath.
the second of her images i used is named "Petunia and Coleus".
i cropped in on a close up of the petunia and this time i used my PanPastels on pastel board (the pastel board is a bit more gritty than the canvas board).
{cropped print out of original} {PanPastel reproduction}
i am going to try a few other substrates before i am ready to commit to a class project, but i am loving the play time!
Wow Donna... these are FABULOUS... love them!! and the red poppy is just so awesome...

Oh Donna, your repros are wonderful. You and Pan Pastel are a great combo. Your piece for Spark is splendiferous. Working on black sure changed the quality of the background. This blog made me smile.

These ar great, I need theses Pan Pastels and classes. Thanks,
Posted by: cathy L | July 12, 2011 at 09:51 AM
So you just copied someone elses work using a different medium and think thats ok? No, it's blatent copying. And the fact that you are getting paid to copy someones work and then teach others is disgusting. You should use others work as inspiration, you copied her work exactly down to all the details, the shading, etc. Be creative and use your own mind to create something!

Do you like PanPastels better than paint?
Posted by: Judy Webb | July 12, 2011 at 10:20 AM
Your Pan pastels piece is absolutely stunning! I would love to take this class at Spark - now, just how to convince my husband that I need to attend Spark...hmmm...
Posted by: Jeanne Kelly | July 12, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Lisa,
I don't think you read Donna's post carefully enough. She IS using Georgia's work as INSPIRATION to try out the pan pastels. She is not getting paid to copy her work. She stated clearly that she is "playing" with the pan pastels until she is ready to come up with a project (of her own) for the class she will be teaching. Be careful with your words.

OMG!!! They are just goregeous!!! You just might become more famous for poppies that Georgia!!!!
Posted by: Linda Polaretzki | July 12, 2011 at 11:01 AM
hi lisa,
i can understand if i was profiting off these pieces, i assure you i am not. i am just experimenting and playing with substrates and using the images as subject matter as i experiment.

so exciting....the pan pastel art is amazing, and how much fun are you going to have at Spark?! Margie had me excited to go, but the bathroom renovation took the money instead. Sounds like a great event and you'll be a hit with the pan pastels.
Posted by: debbie McIntyre | July 12, 2011 at 11:31 AM
judy this is a great question...the answer is they are different so i like them equally, but they achieve very different results...does that make sense?
i do not think paint is as forgiving as pan pastels and for that reason it is much easier to create with them for me, however, they certainly wont drip, lol...and i need that too!
Posted by: donna downey | July 12, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Oh goodness! Just gorgeous! I want to go to Spark so bad ...I live in Salt Lake City and I'm so close to the location. I'm budgeting, but it's looking bleak! But, I'm happy that I can enjoy your beautiful pieces via blogland! Are you going to be adding these to your PanPastel on line classes? I just ordered Class 101, can't wait to get started. I'll look forward to seeing more PanPastel beauty! Thanks for sharing.

It is a long, long tradition of art students to copy the work of Master painters. From whom is it better to learn. Your rendering of O'Keefe's work is lovely.
Posted by: michele | July 12, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Many famous artists from the past and I'm sure contemporary artists of today train by copying masters works - they can often be found in museums working away with the master painting in front of them. As long as they're not trying to sell these works as their own this is a traditional way of learning...

Georgia O'Keeffe is one of my favorites...well done Donna..your making pan pastels a do-able medium..I love 101 and 102..thanks you for sharing your art and continuing to inspire..I look forward to the next class.

They're beautiful Donna - there has to be a better word but I can't come up with it right now. I've recently started trying to replicate art work that I appreciate - and I learn so much in the process.

Oh my! I love Giorgia's work too...are you sure you two are not related? What a future you have.

Great job, Donna. I have been a Georgia O'Keefe fan for years & have the red poppy and purple
petunia prints. I would love to see you try your hand at painting a Zinna on canvas. I plant them in my garden every year and they come in such beautiful colors.

Well, then, I'm in serious trouble cause I copy the heck (or TRY and never do it!) out of Donna's work and Christy Tomlinson! Sue me! I believe that for an artist and teacher it would bring great honor to know that their work influenced and touched someone's creative soul enough to try to create something as beautiful. Donna, I think you did a fantabulous, beautifully stunning job and I say be inspired by whatever moves you because one bad apple isn't gonna spoil this bunch who loooove your work and the beauty you create. I bought the painter colors of Pan Pastels last month and have even been seen sleeping with one in my hand when I went to bed! I looove them and I'm so thankful that you share your talent with us that appreciate your gift.
Rock On, Donna!!
